As early as 2025: popular islands to introduce tourist tax
Mogan, a popular resort in Spain’s Canary Islands, is introducing a tourist tax from 2025. The funds raised through this initiative will be used to improve the city’s infrastructure and implement environmental projects.
The tax will be €0.15 per night and will be charged to tourists regardless of the type of accommodation they stay in, be it hotels or rented accommodation. Over time, the amount may increase to €1.14 per night.
The Mogan City Hall noted that the new tax will be significantly lower than similar fees in other tourist regions of Spain:
● In Barcelona, tourists pay from €5 to €7.50 per night.
● In the Balearic Islands — from €1 to €4.
● In Valencia — from €0.50 to €2.
● In Malaga, they are planning to introduce a tax of €3 per night.
The main purpose of introducing the tax is to reduce the financial burden on local residents so that the maintenance of public spaces and infrastructure does not depend solely on their contributions. This step is also aimed at developing sustainable tourism and creating more comfortable conditions for both visitors and locals.
