Every day in Spain, about 40 houses become victims of illegal occupation. The problem of okupas affects any property owner, regardless of the region. But who are okupas, why does it take years to evict them, and how can you protect your home?
Who are okupas?
Okupas (from the Spanish ocupar - "to occupy") are people who illegally move into empty properties. Catalonia remains the leader in the number of such cases, where more than 42% of all occupations occur. It is followed by Andalusia, Valencia and Madrid.
Why is the problem so difficult to solve?
In some Catalan cities, local government policies actually facilitate the actions of squatters. They not only turn a blind eye to occupations, but also issue official recommendations that help delay the eviction process.
How to avoid okupas?
To do this, you need to use the services of trusted agencies and buy real estate in guarded complexes where there is video surveillance. Okupas will never occupy such real estate.
