Where do Spaniards move from big cities?
In 2024, Spain registered about 1.7 million internal moves, 0.3% less than the year before. Of these, 685,000 people changed provinces, and 533,000 moved within one autonomous community.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, the population of large cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia) is growing due to foreigners, while internal migration shows an outflow of population. Active outflow is also observed in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Seville, Malaga, Alicante, Palma, Fuenlabrada, San Sebastian and other cities.
The largest population growth due to internal moves was recorded in Dos Hermanas (Seville), Getafe (Madrid) and Sabadell (Barcelona), as well as in Zaragoza, Valladolid and Oviedo. Among the leaders in population growth are Villalbilla, Valdemoro, Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), Vilanova y la Geltrú (Barcelona), Arrecife (Las Palmas) and Chiclana de la Frontera (Cadiz).
