Measures to address the problem of affordable housing

The Spanish government is continuing to take steps to address the problem of affordable housing. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced a series of initiatives aimed at supporting tenants and regulating the property market. These include tax exemptions for landlords who rent out their homes at affordable rates, the transfer of over 3,000 properties to a new public housing fund, and stricter rules and increased taxes on short-term rentals for tourists.

Sánchez stressed the need to ensure a level playing field for landlords and hoteliers. “It is unfair that those who rent out three, four or five apartments a day pay less tax than hotels,” he said, arguing for the need for change.

These measures are aimed at creating a balance between the interests of the tourism and housing markets, as well as improving conditions for local residents who are facing rising rents due to a shortage of affordable housing.
